COLLECTOR IVAN MOROZOV: FROM VAN GOGH TO THE AVANT-GARDE
Samara, Tretyakov Gallery
April 30, 2025 — September 28, 2025
On April 30, an exhibition titled "Collector Ivan Morozov: From Van Gogh to the Avant-Garde" opened at the Tretyakov Gallery branch in Samara. The project became possible thanks to the initiative of the Akron Holding group of companies, which is celebrating its 25th anniversary this year.
The exhibition is dedicated to the collection of European and Russian art of Ivan Abramovich Morozov (1871–1921). At the center of the project are masterpieces by Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Othon Friesz, Henri Matisse, André Derain, and Auguste Herbin. They enter into a dialogue with Russian painting of the 1900s–1920s, with the favorite artists of the collector Ivan Morozov — Konstantin Korovin and Alexander Golovin — as well as with works by Igor Grabar, Konstantin Somov, Nikolai Milioti, Martiros Saryan, and other authors.
For Morozov, as for representatives of other merchant dynasties, collecting was not merely a tribute to fashion. The ideas of patriotism and socially responsible business were inseparably linked with the study of European culture and science. The exhibition "Collector Ivan Morozov: From Van Gogh to the Avant-Garde" emphasizes the role of patronage in supporting contemporary art and the formation of museum collections.
