MARIA YAKUNCHIKOVA-WEBER

Moscow, Tretyakov Gallery
October 14, 2020 - January 24, 2021
In the intimate exhibition dedicated to Maria Yakunchikova, we wanted to convey an image and mood of an old Russian estate. The image that the artist loved so much, the image that she turned to so many times throughout her short career. This is not our first project in the halls of the Engineering Building of the Tretyakov Gallery, complex geometry of the halls of which had predetermined the nature of the spatial organisation. In the first, introductory, hall we delicately (at the level of images and associations) “completed” the interior of the living room, bringing the original things of Yakunchikova’s authorship to the front (furniture, tapestry, sketches in various techniques). Then in the second, main hall, we created a relative division with the help of a zigzag central element - a pylon. The hall is divided into smaller segments by the topics that guide the visitor through the chronicle of the artist's work. Decorations are minor, they are just hints, shadows, halftones. The colour scheme is almost monochrome, secondary to the rest, but it unites the complex geometry of the halls with a common mood.
